SECOND GENERATION TOOLS:
DEFINITION AND CLASSIFICATION

The second-generation search tools are "client-side" systems providing a great level of scheduling and personalizing tasks, with an increased power comparing with the first generation tools.

We developed a classification valid only for a fraction of the available software according to our practical needs, without following any technical criteria. This means that there are several inconsistencies such as the different nature of the Z39.50 clients and the rest of the tools, or the fact that the primary use of mapping software is not really to generate maps.

More important, some of the programs are "true" agents, so they are extremely powerful. But the results they provide now are not more sophisticated than those obtained from "simpler" ones specialized in automation of tasks. We merged both types in the same category as our primary goal is to describe their functionality in order to improve scientometric work.

Some descriptions will be available soon. Evaluations and experiences about these programs could be added if they are provided to us.
